Church Bells and Coffee

When I was a teenager living in Sunningdale, I remember vividly that on sunday mornings I felt pretty rankled at the bells that rang from the church we lived opposite. I thought it was the height of rudeness that I and many others (but let's face it - I wasn't really thinking of these 'many other', just myself) were being woken at the unsociable hour of - gasp - 9.45 am!! I mean, honestly! I would bury my head under the duvet and wait for the irritating noise to cease so that I could once more resume my interrupted sleep.

Amazing. That feels like twenty lifetimes ago, as it would do to anyone with young children or, in fact, things to do on a sunday. Even if most of us had the opportunity to sleep that long, we wouldn't be able to now. But oh how I wish I could try it one day! (And I suppose the opportunity will present itself, but I shall have to wait until Maya and Lily are teenagers themselves).

On another note, I seem to have developed the habit of 'needing' a strong filter coffee each and every morning to kick-start me into action. I used to drink gallons of the black sticky stuff whilst living in Spain, replete with a thin rollie cigarette. Yuck. Thankfully I kicked both habits and whilst the urge to smoke hasn't returned, I can feel myself starting to get edgy by mid-morning if I haven't had my brew. In the last few years, coffee has been more of a treat for me and if I've drunk it whilst feeling exhausted, it has picked me up for approximately fifteen minutes before it drops me again, leavning me with a crashing headache and bad breath. I am probably one of the greatest fans of herbal teas on earth, but nothing seems to give me the same lift as coffee...suggestions for natural highs on a postcard please to help me avert coffee addiction once again!

  1. I gave up coffee last year and suddenly discovered that my migraines, which had been terrible for years, stopped. Oddly, other forms of caffeine such as coke and tea don't seem to affect me. I drink decaf now and although it doesn't give me the same 'buzz' it does at least taste and smell like coffee... ;)
